In this article, I have explained the passive voice of past indefinite tense with examples and exercises. I have also explained the passive voice of positive sentences, negative sentences, interrogative sentences, and "WH" interrogative sentences.

Passive Voice of Past Indefinite Tense

Positive Sentence

Positive Sentence starts with an object, and then helping “was” “were” is used. Past participle or 3rd form o of the verb is used as a main. By is used after the main verb. At the end of the sentence, the subject is used.

Structure

Object + Helping Verb Be + Main verb Past participle + By + Subject

Object + was/were + VIII + By + Subject

Examples

  • (A.V.) He bought a book.
  • (P.V.) A book was bought by him.
  • A.V.) She shed tears.
  • (P.V.) Tears were shed by her.
  • (A.V.) He played football.
  • (P.V.) Football was played by him.
  • (A.V) He stole your book.
  • (P.V.) Your book was stolen by him.
  • (A.V) I helped her.
  • (P.V.) She was helped by me.

Negative Sentences

Rules

In negative sentences, not is used after the helping verb was and were. Past participle or 3rd form of the verb is used as a main verb. After a helping verb, “by” is used. At the end of the sentence, the subject is used.

Structure

Object + Helping Verb + Not + Main Verb + By + Subject

Object + Was/Were + Not + VIII + By + Subject

Examples

  • (A.V.) He did not buy a book.
  • (P.V.) A book was not bought by him.
  • A.V.) She did not shed tears.
  • (P.V.) Tears were not shed by her.
  • (A.V.) He did not play football.
  • (P.V.) Football was not played by him.
  • (A.V) He did not steal your book.
  • (P.V.) Your book was not stolen by him.
  • (A.V) I did not help her.
  • (P.V.) She was not helped by me.

Interrogative Sentences

Rules

Interrogative sentences start with the helping verb was/ were and then, the object is used. Past participle or 3rd form of the verb is used as a main verb and then “by” is used. At the end of the sentence, the subject is used.

Structure

Helping Verb + object + Main Verb + By + Subject

Was/Were + Object + VIII + By + Subject

Examples

  • (A.V.) Did he buy a book?
  • (P.V.) Was a book bought by him?
  • A.V.) Did she shed tears?
  • (P.V.) Were tears shed by her?
  • (A.V.) Did he play football?
  • (P.V.) Was football played by him?
  • (A.V) Did he steal your book?
  • (P.V.) Was your book stolen by him?
  • (A.V) Did I help her?
  • (P.V.) Was she helped by me?

(WH) Interrogative Sentences

Rules

(WH) Interrogative sentences start with (WH) words like What, When, Where, How, Which, and then helping verb “was” and “were” is used. Past participle or 3rd form of the verb is used as a main verb and then By is used. At the end of the sentence, the object is used.

Structure

(WH) Words + Helping Verb + Object + Main Verb + By + Subject

Why + Was/Were + Object + VIII + By + Subject

Examples

  • (A.V.) Why did he buy a book?
  • (P.V.) How was a book bought by him?
  • A.V.)When did she shed tears?
  • (P.V.)When were tears shed by her?
  • (A.V.)How did he play football?
  • (P.V.)How was football played by him?
  • (A.V)What did he steal your book?
  • (P.V.)What was your book stolen by him?
  • (A.V) How did I help her?
  • (P.V.) Ho was she helped by me?

(WH ) Who 

Rules

If the word "Who" is used in the active voice "By Whom" is used in order to convert it into passive voice. The sentence starts with "By Whom". Was and were is used after By whom and then object is used. At the end of the sentence past participle or 3rd form of the verb is used.

Structure

By Whom + Helping Verb + Object + Main Verb

By Whom + Was/Were + Object + VII

Examples

  • (A.V.) Who stole your book?
  • (P.V.) By whom was your book stolen?
  • (A.V.) Who did buy many things?
  • (P.V.)By whom were many things not bought?
  • (A.V.)Who told a lie? 
  • (P.V.)By whom was a lie told?
  • (A.V.)Who Stared at ladies? 
  • (P.V.) By whom were ladies stared?
