Passive Voice of Past Continuous tense with examples and exercise.

 In this article, I have explained the passive voice of past continuous tense with examples and exercises. I have explained the affirmative sentences, negative sentences, and interrogative sentences. I have also given the active voice of past continuous tense. I have also given an example of an active and passive voice.



Passive Voice of past continuous tense

Rules

Helping verb Was/Were + Being is used in order to convert active into passive voice. Past participle or 3rd form of the verb is used as a main verb. By is used after the main verb.

Affirmative Sentences

Affirmative sentences start with the object, and then the helping verb Was/ Were + Being is used. Past participle or 3rd form of the verb is used as a main verb. By is used after 3rd form of the verb. At the end of the sentence, the subject is used.

Structure

Object + Helping Verb + Helping Verb + Main Verb + By + Subject

Object + Was / Were + Being + VIII + By + Subject

Examples


  • They were watching the movie. (Active Voice)
  • The movie was being watched by them. (Passive Voice)
  • She was eating an apple. (Passive Voice)
  • An apple was being eaten by her. (Passive Voice)
  • We were playing cricket. (Passive Voice)
  • Cricket was being played by us. (Active Voice)
  • He was preparing for the test. (Active Voice)
  • The test was prepared for by him. (Passive Voice)
  • She was reading the novel. (Active  Voice )
  • The novel was being read by her. (Passive Voice)

Negative Sentences

Rules

Negative sentences start with the object, and then the helping verb "Was / Were" + not being"is used. Past participle or 3rd form of a verb is used as a main verb. By is used after the main verb. At the end of the sentence, the subject is used.

Structure

Subject + Helping Verb + Not + Helping verb + Main Verb + By + Subject

Subject + Was / Were + Not + Being + VIII + By + Subject

  • They were not watching the movie. (Active Voice)
  • The movie was not being watched by them. (Passive Voice)
  • She was not eating an apple. (Passive Voice)
  • An apple was not being eaten by her. (Passive Voice)

Interrogative Sentences

Interrogative sentences start with the helping verb Was /Were, and then object is used. Helping verb "Being "is used after the object, and then past participle or 3rd form of the verb is used. By is used after the main verb. At the end of the sentence, the subject is used.

Helping Verb + Object + Helping Verb + Main Verb + By + Subject

Was / Were + Object + Being + VIII + Subject

(WH) Interrogative Sentences

Rules

(WH) Interrogative sentences start with (WH) words like What, When, Where, How, Which, etc.and then helping verb Was/Were is used. The object is used after helping verb Was/Were, and Being is added. Past participle or 3rd form of the verb is used, and then by is used after the main verb. At the end of the sentence, the subject is used.

Structure

(WH) Words + Helping Verb + Object + Being + Main Verb + By + Subject

Why + Was / Were + Object + Being + VIII + By + Subject

  • What were they watching the movie? (Active Voice)
  • What was the movie being watched by them? (Passive Voice)
  • Why was she eating an apple? (Passive Voice)

(WH) Who

(WH) "Who" sentence, start with "By Whom.", and then helping verb "Was/Were "  is used.  The object is used after Was/Were. Past participle or 3rd form of the verb is used after "being".

Structure

By Whom + Helping Verb + Object + Helping Verb + Main Verb

By Whom + Was/Were + Object + Being + VIII

  • By whom was a book being read? (Passive Voice)
  • Who was helping you? (Active Voice)
