Summary

The story of " The New Year Constitution" has been written with reference to the Government of India Act 1935. It is a representative story. It represents the feelings and emotions of a common man ruled by Britsh. Ustad Mangu is the central character of the story the new year constitutions. Manto criticizes the concept of the constitution which always keeps common people at suffering end. At the same time, the writer shows how the simplicity and innocence of the common people are manipulated by the ruling class.


Ustad Mangu was a tonga driver. He too hated the British rulers due to their attitude toward people. He also entertained high hopes with the enforcement of the Government of India Act 1935. The New year's constitution was going to be enforced on 1st April 1935. The new Act would liberate them from British imperialism. Mangu was very happy at the news. He was already in seventh heaven. He believes that The New constitution will give equal rights to Indian people.


He wanted to share the feelings of joy with other Tona drivers. He came to the Adda in the evening but did not find any of his friends there. he told this great and happy news to Nathoo. He was also happy that the new constitution was going to force these white mice once and for all back into their miserable holes. He begins to wait for the 1st of April when the Act is to be promulgated. But, all his hopes and expectations about the constitution remained unfulfilled.


On 1st April Ustad Mangu went to the stable, set up his tonga, and took the road.  Then in the morning, he went around the streets of the city but everything had the same old outlook. There was nothing. People. The students of Government College were all dressed, but somehow they looked shabby to ustad Mangu. He wanted to see something colorful and dramatic. Gut nothing new happened. He moved back to Mall.


Once he takes a fare to the cantonment. There he encounters a Gora soldier with whom he had a row the previous year. Now he decides to settle the accounts with him. he asks the Gora soldier where he wants to go. The soldier tells him that he wants to be taken to the dancing girl's bazaar. Ustad Mangu demands five rupees for it. The soldier flares up and beats Mangu with his stick. At this, Mangu begins to beat him black and blue The soldier is surprised and begins to call for help. Mango is arrested and thrown in lock-up where he comes to know that it is the same old constitution and the British are still the rulers of India.

"The New Constitution" by Saadat Hassan Manto is an interesting and representative story of a common man. It describes the feelings and emotions of a common man. Ustad Mangu is the main character of the story. Through Ustad Mango, the writer shows us the feeling of a common Indian. At the same time, the writer shows how politics manipulate common and innocent people. The writer criticizes the concept of the constitution which do not give any relief to a common man


Ustad Magu is a respected man among his fellows. He is a simple and uneducated man. But he has a lot of knowledge of the world and politics. Once he came to know that a new constitution is going to implement in India. It will give the Indians independence.


 Ustad Magu is very happy because he hates the British rulers. He believes that the new constitution will give freedom from Brish rule. He tells this information with his friends and starts to wait for the 1st of April when the Act is implemented


On another occasion, he takes tows lawyers as fares. He listens to them carefully. They talk about the new constitution. Ustad Mangu guesses from their conversation that the new constitution is going to give Indian freedom. One day he takes some students to his Tonga. Their exciting discussion about the new constitution inspires him.


Finally, the 1st of April comes. Mangu gets up early in the morning and takes to the roads of Lahore. He wants to see the change brought by New Constitution. But everything is the same. It disappoints Mangu.


He goes to the District Couts where he hopes the new constitution would be launched. But nothing happens there as well. He takes a fare to the cantonment. There he quarrels with a Gora soldier with whom he had quarreled the last year. At that time, mangu had borne insults. Now he decides to take revenge on him. He asks him where he wants to go.


 The soldier tells him that he wants to go to the dancing girls' bazaar. Ustad Mangu demands five rupees for it. The soldier became angry and he started beating ustad Mango.  Mangu begins to beat him also in response. He believes that there is a new constitution. The soldier called the police. Two policemen came and arrest ustad Mangu. Ustad mango was sent to jail and he is told that there is an old constitution and the British are still the rulers of India.
