Summary
" The Killers" by Ernest Hemingway is a thought-provoking story. It presents to us a situation in which we find human beings helpless. They cannot decide what to do. Their existence is on chance. At the same time, this story is a satire on American society and the law and order system. We see that all the American claims of individual security for all are no more than lip service. The writer creates feelings of suspense and fear at one and the same time. He keeps the reader guessing as to what happens next.
As the story begins, two hirelings enter Henry's Lunchroom. Their names are to eat. But, later on, they keep the lunchroom staff, George, Nick, and Sam, as hostage routine carefully. They know that he comes to the lunchroom for his dinners. So the killers wait for him for a long time. Fortunately, he does not turn up that day. Finally, they leave the lunchroom, but also leave behind them a looming shadow of fear.
Nick decides to inform Ole Anderson of the incident and warn him against the killers. He calls on him and finds him lying in his bed. He is fully dressed and staring constantly at the wall. When Nick tells him of the killers., he responds with passive helplessness. He has been a prize-fighter. He double-crossed somebody. That ma has sent these killers to take revenge for him.
Ole Anderson is fed up with running g for his life. Now he decides to face the eventuality. he turns down all offers of help from Nick. Nick leaves him lying in the bed and returns to the lunchroom. He shares his thoughts with George that he intends to leave the town for good. however, the question remains whether it is the solution. Can he find a place that is absolutely free from fear and terror?
